Suffering in the wilds, slavery to Natives, and further imprisonment in the St. Augustine jail, the protagonist continuously pushes himself so that he may return home.

Local locations visited or mentioned in the text include the St. Augustine jail, but it would predate the current "Authentic Old Jail" which dates only to the 1890s. As there would have been a jail in the Castillo, this is the location used on the map.

Near the end of the book when the main character is a POW on a Muslim ship, his punishment for stealing a slice of bread is graphically described.</text>
