Some of the chapters are set in the modern day, but the rest of the story is a narrative that takes place during the British and Second Spanish Periods following the lives, loves, joys, and sorrows of British settlers excited to start life a-new in St. Augustine, and their slaves. Cora Lee Westerby and her parents are some of the colonists, and they are and the others are devastated when the lives they built for themselves come to an end with the ceding of Florida back to the Spanish. But not all the British colonists want to leave and they stay as long as possible before being forced to go to Nova Scotia and start over again.

Told partially as reminiscences, this story is set in WWII-era St. Augustine and told from many points-of-views both on land and at sea, nevertheless focuses on a restaurant near the Atlantic Ocean on Anastasia Island, Uncle Sam's. Racial tensions are taut in the Oldest City. Yet, all is not as it seems. While discussions of "racial purity" and untermensch occur on land and highschool senior Winnie Greer begins dreaming of a singing career in a segregated world, a German U-Boat lurks off the coast and is hunted by the Americans.
This story makes a nod to the local St. Augustinians who were enlisted by the U.S. Coast Guard to help watch for U-boats both from shrimp boats and from land.

Youth]]> Young Rod Wheeler is a scout for the U.S. Army. The Second Seminole War has just started, and Rod is out scouting one day when he overhears some Seminoles bargaining with a gun runner! Later, during a march between Forts King and Brooke at Wahoo Swamp, that becomes the November 1836 Battle of Wahoo Swamp (in present-day Sumter County), Rod almost steps on a painting of a girl. He is confident she must live in St. Augustine and he would like to return her miniature and thank her for it saving his life during the battle. In the course of his adventures, they meet. She is Dolly James, and she introduces him to new places and experiences.

Historical]]>One of the earliest books about St. Augustine, this historical novel retells the story of the Huguenot settlement at Ft. Caroline in Jacksonville. It details the power struggle between the French Huguenots, the English Anglicans, and the Catholic Spanish, as well as the land dispute they had in the New World. This book focuses on the French Huguenot’s journey with a more balanced view than normal on the disputes between the Spanish and the French.

Race Relations]]> This novel is told from various perspectives, including several relatives of future president, Andrew Jackson, and follows events from near the end of the 1st Seminole War (1814-1819) through to the middle of the 2nd Seminole War (1835-1842), from West Point, NY to Florida and as far west as Tennessee and New Orleans. During the story's time set in St. Augustine, some of the characters interact with Osceola, and Governor Andrew Jackson's and his wife, Rachel's characters reveal their opinions of the Florida Territory. The people attempt to continue living their lives in the midst of an uncertain time, where their actions - even small ones - may have a huge impact upon the tense political situation.
A selection of the other historical personages who are characters in this novel are Chief Micanopy, senators from various states, President James Monroe, other politicians or military men, and the extended family of President Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachel.
