Abstract A summary of the resource. This collection of short stories follows the unique inhabitants of a Southern, Florida city. Each section opens with a poem that relates to each character being explored. The series begins with John Rodman, a "keeper of the dead," who formerly served in the Civil War on the Union side. Another short story, "Sister St. Luke" is set at Pelican Island, which is located between Melbourne and Vero Beach. The other individuals explored thereafter are wholly their own and, though their tales may intersect at times, they are most assuredly the focus in each section. It is hard to identify specific locations in this story, but due to her time living here and intimacy with the city, Miss Woolson has created a fictionalized version, as confirmed by a reference to the Minorcan descendants. Constance Fenimore Woolson is the grandniece of well-known American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. She lived in Florida in the late 1870s before moving to Italy in 1879.
