Don Leon de Sandoval and his daughter Donna Clara leave St. Augustine to go to his plantation on the St. Johns near the Mission of Los Angeles (possibly Salamototo near present-day Picolata), but are waylaid by a couple of Natives and pursued by Don Pablo, Clara's lover. Don Pablo has mercy on one of the Natives hung by Don Sandoval's party by cutting him down before he dies, and by going to his chief, Turkey-Foot, vengeance against Don Sandoval is put into motion.

In this heavily fictionalized account of the life of Osceola, the narration is predominately from his point-of-view. The novel follows the course of Osceola's life up to the point of his ignominious capture at Fort Peyton (southeast of St. Augustine), imprisonment at Fort Marion, and death in Charleston. The two teenage boys who befriend Osceola and witness many of the events of his life are brothers, Arthur and Herbert Wilson. They meet when Arthur saves Osceola from General Thompson while trying to find Herbert, who was captured by a Seminole band.
Other historical personages included are: Micanopy, Jumper, Wild Cat, General Jessup, future presidents, Andrew Jackson and Zachary Taylor, and more.
