Young Tommy Wheeler and his mother live in St. Augustine. His dad abandoned them years ago because of his mother began operating a negligee shop. Tommy tries to live as quietly as possible to avoid being made fun of by the neighborhood kids, and harassed by the adults who think his family is abusive.

Local locations visited or mentioned include, but are not limited to Aviles Street, Cemetery Lane (actually Tolomato Road), the Fountain of Youth, the Hotel Ponce De Leon, the Castillo de San Marcos, the St. Augustine Lighthouse, and Matanzas Bay.
