Abstract

The book follows Anna and her family, enslaved from a plantation in South Carolina, and their journey south after hearing of a place where they could be free - Fort Mose, in Spanish Florida.

This is the first book in Laws's trilogy and the characters do not reach the Castillo de San Marcos until the very end of the book.
