Awanessa, a Cherokee healer, and Jeremiah, a runaway slave are forbidden from marrying, plus Jeremiah wants freedom while Awanessa does not want to join the Trail of Tears and leave behind her native land. Forced by the circumstances around them, they flee to St. Augustine to catch a ship to Jamaica where they can live in peace and pursue their dreams.
