Abstract

This book follows Jem, a boy who was born into slavery but later escaped to Spanish Florida and Fort Mose. Sometime after his arrival, he begins hearing tales of English spies in the forest. Despite his age, he wants to help defend his new home, and decides to join the militia - but the Fort Mose woman watching over him, Phaedra, forbids him from it.

Other notable local locations visited include the Castillo de San Marcos, the Old City Gates, and the seawall.
