Abstract

Historical background: The Ledger Art produced by Plains Indians who were POWs at the Castillo during the 1870s are well-known examples of Native artwork. An unexpected situation developed when the Indians became tourist attractions, and their artwork becoming desirable and was sold to locals or tourists.

This children's book is a fictional version of how a 14-year-old St. Augustine girl is enlisted to help teach art as part of the Army's "re-education" program for the POWs, including to a 9-year-old girl who is with her father in the fort.
