Abstract

With a mix of dramatic monologues, dynamic characters, and symphonic storytelling, Paul Green recreates the tale of the founding and building of St. Augustine by Pedro Menendez de Aviles at the Timucuan village of Seloy. The play also recounts Menendez's rough beginnings in Spain through to a brighter future in newly discovered Florida.

The other identifiable local location is Matanzas Inlet.
"First produced in the Saint Augustine amphitheatre, June 27, 1965, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the oldest city in America." ~ from the half-title page.

This play was declared Florida's state play in 1973 by the state's legislature.
