Massacre Inlet

Dublin Core

Abstract

A French teenager and Huguenot, Guy Gaspard, and his father are part of Jean Ribault's relief flotilla sent from France to Ft. Caroline with supplies, only the Spaniards arrive and scatter the fleet waiting to enter the River of May (St. Johns River). Shipwrecked and stranded leagues south of Ft. Caroline and St. Augustine, Guy and his father, Pierre, and the other survivors set out to reach Ft. Caroline - and his mother. But when he hears the fort was destroyed when he meets Menendez at the Matanzas Inlet and the prisoners taken to St. Augustine, he escapes the massacre and heads there to search for her, befriending some of the local Timucuans in the process.

Other notable local locations visited include Selooe Inlet (Matanzas Bay/River), the Timucuan village of Selooe (Seloy), and Fort San Juan de Pinos (the first Spanish fort for St. Augustine).
