Abstract

In this "cracker western," fur trapper John MacKenzie reaches St. Augustine after spending a year in the Florida wilderness. Profitable as his trade might be, he welcomes the change in scenery. But soon after his arrival in the Ancient City, the call of adventure pulls on him to leave. Meanwhile, Becky Campbell, an indentured servant to the treacherous James Tyrone is in grave danger. She and MacKenzie escape the city, setting out on an adventure alongside two rag-tag allies who are pursued by Tyrone's mercenaries in search of old, buried gold.

The identifiable local locations are the Fortress St. Marks (Castillo de San Marcos),  Anastasia Island, the Matanzas Inlet, San Sebastian River, and the St. Johns River.
