Set in the "beaver" shaped state with the only "stream" of note being the St. Johns River, Verne's tale takes place during the American Civil War. A rush of hooves and a carriage coming over the road from St. Augustine into Picolata introduces Spanish-American, Texar of Black Creek, to the reader, who learn he is a Secessionist who believes Florida will not fall to an invading Federal force, but not all those around him have this same belief. What will happen to Texar and his nemesis, Mr. Burbank when they next meet, and which one of them is on the side of justice?
The other identifiable local locations are the Mantanzas River, Six Mile Creek, Trent Creek (Trout Creek), Fort Marion (Castillo de San Marcos), the Cathedral Basilica, and Anastasia Island.
