Abstract
This novel follows Edgarda "Garda" Thorne, a woman of both Spanish and English descent who has lived in the fictional town of Gracias-A-Dios her whole life. Garda struggles to find her footing in the aftermath of the American Civil War, the rippling consequences of its conclusion deeply affecting her sleepy Southern city. But from the uncertainty of a post-war South, Garda finds her perspective on the world changing when a man brings the beautiful romance of novels into her own life.
Gracias-A-Dios is a fictionalized version of St. Augustine, but other than the St. Johns River, the other places have fictitious names, and some of these would include the Plaza de la Constitucion, the Cathedral Basilica, and the Trinity Episcopal Parish Church.

Constance Fenimore Woolson is the grandniece of well-known American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. She lived in Florida in the late 1870s before moving to Italy in 1879. Her Florida-based short stories are considered her best, and she originally published them in serialized magazines in the 1870s.
