Don Leon de Sandoval and his daughter Donna Clara leave St. Augustine to go to his plantation on the St. Johns near the Mission of Los Angeles (possibly Salamototo near present-day Picolata), but are waylaid by a couple of Natives and pursued by Don Pablo, Clara's lover. Don Pablo has mercy on one of the Natives hung by Don Sandoval's party by cutting him down before he dies, and by going to his chief, Turkey-Foot, vengeance against Don Sandoval is put into motion.
