This gritty story fictionalizes St. Augustine with difference names and places, but takes place around 1964, during the Civil Rights Movement. Written shortly after the events that led to the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the story is a twist on the actual occurrences that propelled St. Augustine into National news, and shares the events through the perspective of the people who lived and suffered through the riots in St. Augustine. There are also flashbacks to World War II and how the Jews were treated unfairly, similar to African-Americans, one incident being one of the protagonist’s arrest just for witnessing something that happens.
Fictionalized local locations visited or mentioned include, but are not limited to St. Clementine (St. Augustine), Lincolnville, Florida East Coast rail yard (no longer exists), the Castillo de San Marcos, the old slave market, Fountain of Truth (Fountain of Youth), the Wax Works (Potter's Wax Museum), and the Casa Monica Hotel.
