After encountering a hurricane that washes them ashore, Pedro and Maria—the children of the newly-appointed vice-governor of Florida—find themselves the only survivors of a convoy that was supposed to deliver them, their father, and others to the colony of Florida. Although they are taken in by the governor and his wife, Pedro and Maria sneak away from St. Augustine in search of their father, who Pedro believes is still alive. Pedro and Maria are captured by the Yemassee and they learn their father is a prisoner of the Apalachees.
Identifiable local locations visited or mentioned in the text are the Governor's House (Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum).
