Abstract
**Warning: Some of the language or characterizations in this book represent the time period in which the book takes place, and are no longer considered acceptable.**
**Warning: Some readers may find certain scenes in this book disturbing.**
After being hired at a new St. Augustine hotel as a maid, Birdie Fairfax, a young, multi-ethnic woman meets and befriends the red-haired gardener, Newt Phillips. She also makes a dangerous and violent enemy. Because laws and societal convention bar Birdie and Newt from being public about their friendship-to-love relationship, heartbreak is guaranteed. Set over many years in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this story follows Birdie, her friends, and their lives working at the fictitious Montclair.
Local locations visited or mentioned include, but are not limited to King Street and St. George Street.
This book includes at least one rape scene.
