Type

This is one of the original streets in St. Augustine.

Description

Located south of the Plaza de la Constitución, St. Francis Street was named to honor the dedicated work and sacrifices of the Franciscan missionary priests, whose monastery once occupied the location where the St. Francis Barracks (Florida National Guard) now stands. St. Francis Street once had a famous date palm, which was killed by the freeze of 1885.

Between 1889 and 1892, St. Francis Street was one of the streets that was paved with wood blocks. After 1892, asphalt began to be used to pave St. Augustine's streets.
