After his parents are killed by Natives in the Florida wilderness, Artillery Armes becomes the subject of this book while exploring the wilderness and new European settlements in Northeast Florida. He joins in in the local power struggle among the Spanish, the Indians, and the Americans by fighting his enemies. He loves women, marries twice, and losing his first family to illness.

Historical personages who are characters in this book include the McIntoshes, Zephaniah Kingsley, and Fr. Miguel O'Reilly.

Local locations visited or mentioned in the text include the Castillo de San Marcos, Anastasia Island, and the San Sebastian River.
